From June 1st till June 5th GSSM was the host of a transatlantic science conference together with 5 European partner schools from Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Lithuania and Germany. The science topic of the conference was the investigation of food from the American and European market about genetic modifications.
The mentor team of nine students from Europe arrived already at May 29th to prepare the lab work together with nine US mentors during the weekend. In 2 online meetings during springtime the mentor team education started in advance.
During the 3 days lab workshop the mentors gave some talks about the background information of the experiments and guided their workgroups successful through the lab work. Highlight of the workshop was an ethical debate about pros and cons of genetic engineering in agriculture.
Furthermore each participant of the conference enjoyed the great hospitality and friendship of our American host. In cultural activities we visited the statehouse in Columbia, the University of South Carolina and the Anne Frank house in Columbia.
In a science field trip we visited the PEE DEE Research and Education center of Clemson University in Florence. We got a deep input about the research activities of the center.
